From the Board and Management of NY SPIN

Last week we were deeply saddened to learn that Darren Drake was among the victims of the terrorist attack on the bicycle trail in New York City on Tuesday, October 31, 2017.

In 2013, Darren worked at Fiserv with our Board Chair, Richard Kuper. Darren had some thoughts about Agile and how it helped the “Knowledge Worker”. Richard was convinced that Darren could turn those thoughts into a great presentation and eventually convinced Darren to create and give such a presentation to NY SPIN. Darren gave that presentation: "Does Agile Help the Knowledge Worker?" in November 2013. Darren answered emphatically that it does help the knowledge worker, and he showed us how it did. His proud mother was in the audience.

A review of Darren’s talk will show you how enthusiastic he was about his work and Agile's ability to make things better for workers, management, and customers. That presentation can be viewed here:

When he was killed on Tuesday, Darren was a project manager at Moody's Analytics in lower Manhattan. While bicycling on a work break near his office, Darren was run down by the terrorist, who drove a small rented truck into cyclists and pedestrians to kill and maim. Here is a news article that includes a brief interview with Darren's bereaved father and others close to him:

Our hearts go out to Darren's family, friends, and colleagues. Richard Kuper is writing a condolence note on behalf of himself and NY SPIN to Darren's parents.

At our next monthly meeting, we will request a moment of silence to remember Darren and his enduring contribution to our programs.

May he rest in peace.

Synopsis

The Agile Performance Holarchy: A model for evaluating agile performance

Agile executives and leaders in both the public and private sectors have been demanding a way to objectively evaluate and understand agile performance in their organizations, and have been yearning for a model for building agile capability across the enterprise. Finally, there is a model to both evaluate agile performance and build agile capability; The Agile Performance Holarchy (APH), which draws from both the CMMI and a broad range of Agile frameworks, is that model. The APH provides a fresh new approach to evaluating agile performance and building Agile capability through a series of interdependent performance circles and behavior holons, which exist and thrive within a collection of self-team.

The APH is very different from previous models (like CMMI, ITIL, etc) in that it is “self-organizing,” and a peer-to-peer model that does not depend on the top-down command-and-control structure to be successful.

Highlights:

  • Learn new ways to evaluate agile performance
  • Learn how self-organization can bring a greater level of agile capability
  • Build agile capability with an objective model based on the CMMI, Agile Frameworks, and independent research
This meeting will be valuable to you if you are leading, or a seeking to lead, an Agile team or organization. Jeff will highlight how this innovative model works and goals you can use to raise your organization's Agile performance from one level to the next, all the way to Mastery.

Synopsis

Managing Projects in a Hybrid Agile / Waterfall Environment

This interactive talk will cover the importance of understanding the goals and very valid concerns of the waterfall culture, focused on fiscal responsibility, governance of resources, cost management and a culture of ROI.  So many Agilists view waterfall as backwards-thinking, a problem to be managed, etc. and they dismiss the very valid needs of a disciplined, mature organization.

The irony is that Agile does not propose doing away with the goals behind waterfall; it instead offers an empirical method for getting to the same place with greater accuracy, efficiency, and impact.  Understanding this is the key to success in hybrid environments.

Please bring your questions and experiences in your organization and together we will explore how to meet Waterfall where it is, and offer Agile techniques as an alternative means to quantify, demonstrate, and hone in our ability to deliver projects on time, on budget, and achieve our business objectives in a disciplined manner.  We will also discuss the cultural barriers to making this shift including the need to feel in control, to know, to hold each other accountable and to demonstrate success. I will share experiences and context from the numerous fortune 500 clients I have personally worked with who have integrated Agile and waterfall successfully.
