One Size Does Not Fit All: The Role of Process in a Startup

How and when is process improvement useful in a tech startup?  As the CEO of two mobile computing companies, Jeff Bonar will discuss how process improvement has shaped the direction and integration of two very different startup products — one focused on consumers and one on enterprises. Process improvement has a role to play, but it’s not the right solution for every problem. 

What are the key issues and processes that govern and enable any startup, and in particular have guided the integration of two very different products and their divergent application of technology?

The discussion will include:

  • What is required for today’s products (before you start improving)?
  • Clients vs. users — what do they care about?
  • "Principled de-normalization"
  • Fears and risks vs. technical challenges
  • How Agile applies to business development and funding, not just product development (e.g., keep delivering value and revenue at every step)

 Biography:


Jeffrey Bonar has spent his entire career at the cutting edge of commercializing advanced software technologies. He combines strong business sense, visionary leadership, deep understanding of technology, and passionate commitment to results. His emphasis has always been on commercialization -- taking raw technologies and finding practical and effective applications that generate profitable businesses. His experience with commercialization of software technology includes work with small startups, mid-sized companies, and Fortune 500 corporations in fields including mobile software, customer relationship management, training, and software tools.

Jeff’s startups delivered software and services to customers like Sun Microsystems, Xerox, American Airlines, United Parcel Service, MCI, Fujitsu, Blue Cross of PA, Baxter Healthcare, NYNEX, Ecolab, Time-Warner, HCA, and Canada Trust. At IBM he led the team delivering IBM’s first commercial version of WebSphere, which has emerged as the industry standard middleware web technology. Also at IBM, he drove the adoption of Java as a replacement for proprietary IBM languages and tools.

In the 1980s Jeff was on the Computer Science faculty at the University of Pittsburgh and led the Intelligent Tutoring Systems group at the Learning Research and Development Center. Even as an academic, he was focused on the delivery of real-world, practical systems: his software was used, for example, to train air force recruits in basic electronics.

Jeff received his doctorate, specializing in Artificial Intelligence, at the Computer and Information Science department of the University of Massachusetts, Amherst in 1985.
