An “Agile Hammer”: How My Team Decomposed Agile
Presented by Mariya Breyter
Summary
Have you ever heard of a hammer analogy when people talk about scrum adoption? Imagine you need to put a nail down and decide to use a hammer, but you do not see the value or just don’t know how to use the hammer. So you decide to decompose it into two parts. Now you can use a handle or the metal part to put the nail down, and either part is more effective than a bare fist. But only when you use the hammer as a whole the way it’s intended to be used, you will be able to achieve true efficiency. This is what my story is about: how my team adopted agile by decomposing it, and as we were progressing with our implementation, we realized the value of all the missing ceremonies and ended up with an efficient “agile hammer”.
Biography
Mariya Breyter, PMP, PMI-ACP, CSM, CSP is an over ten-year IT management and project management professional with experience ranging from government jobs to versatile corporate experience in media and education, including managing large teams on multimillion-dollar projects. She is a passionate agilist and an active member of the New York City agile community. Mariya is also a contributor to a number of online resources on agile and project management topics, including her own blog.
In 2011, Mariya was selected as one of the winners of the IT Metrics and Productivity Institute’s PMO Case Study competition. She has combined B.A./M.A. degree in Linguistics and Computer Science and a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Moscow State University, followed by a post-doctoral fellowship at Stanford University.
Her current role is an Agile Coach for a large educational company, but the case study she is going to share with you is related to her former role as a project manager with a media company.

A Global Sales Credit Reporting System Rightsizing Initiative

This presentation will go over a project that analyzed the process of report generation, usage and maintenance of reports in a global MIS system. Upon completion of the project, it was expected that there would be a reduction in the running costs of the system.
Biography
Amit Kaul began his career at D.E. Shaw in 1998 and joined Credit Suisse in 2002. After spending 8 years in the bank's technology division, he is currently the global COO for the Client Onboarding department in the investment banking division.

Several challenges of a real project will be discussed in terms of its impact, solution and affect of the solution. The audience will be invited to interact with their similar challenges and solutions.
Biography
Marc Fiedler is a Senior PMO, Program and Project Manager with extensive experience within IT, Financial Services, Insurance and Big 4 Consulting firms. He has experience in areas including: PMO, project and program management, release management, business management, internal/external consulting, quality management, project management process creation, marketing and technical/ professional course creation/ delivery. He has worked for firms such as JP Morgan Chase, Morgan Stanley and Merrill Lynch, as a fulltime employee. As a consultant working for Ernst & Young and other prestigious consulting firms, he has serviced many other clients in the Financial Services, Insurance, Pharmaceutical and Shipping industries. He has acquired his Agile Scrum Master, Series 7, Mortgage and Life Insurance Licenses/ Certifications. He has degrees in Accounting and Computer Science. Marc is also Vice President of NY SPIN.

Richard Kuper is President & CEO of NY SPIN; Team Lead - Technical Communications with the Investment Services division of Fiserv; and creator and manager of a variety of websites including ThisIsMyStore.com and FindJobsPostJobs.com. He is an amateur photographer and a Certified SIx Sigma YB. Richard has worn a variety of other hats in his career including: management consultant, senior business analyst, quality assurance manager, programming manager and others. Richard designed and manages the NY SPIN website and previously chaired the Requirements Management Special Interest Group and the Privacy and Security Special Interest Group of the predecessor NYC SPIN organization.
