Economics in Agile & Lean Practices
The number of good product ideas always outstrips development capacity, even in shops with highly efficient agile & lean practices. Choosing which projects to do, deciding how to allocate scarce development resources among alternative projects, is a classic case of economic decision making. What insight does economic thinking offer for agile & lean practitioners?
This talk will explore how to apply economic thinking to common decisions in an agile & lean development environment to gain better understanding of trade-offs and reach better decisions. We will show that numerous concepts from economics map naturally into agile & lean contexts, and develop several examples in detail. Attendees will see how economic thinking can become a powerful tool for improving their agile & lean practices, and for selling those practices to senior management. This talk is for technology and product managers, project managers, and business analysts. We will cite specific examples from enterprise software shops in consumer services, entertainment, and finance.

Biography:
William Baxter has a deep passion for combining management skill and technology to solve real-world business problems. Over the course of a long and varied career he has built and led many high-performance development organizations in both start-up and established enterprise settings. Agile and lean principles mesh well with his strong taste for simplicity. He enjoys helping others establish the structures, skills, and culture that let them realize the benefits of rapid customer-centric product development. William holds a PhD in Mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley. He enjoys constant learning, good food of any variety, and people with passion about their ideas. He heads the Agile & Lean practice at InRhythm, a technology and management consultancy in New York City.
