You’re smart. They’re smart. You don’t understand them.  They don’t understand you.  The improvement and upgrade effort has been a mess. Sound familiar?

Off-shoring isn’t just for cheap manufacturing anymore.  As the world gets flatter and flatter, more high-skilled jobs are moving to where the skilled workers are less expensive and the markets are growing.  Development and improvement teams can be spread over several locations, especially India and China, and the implementation of system improvements efforts will often be across several countries.

You’ve probably seen several communication mishaps you’d rather not repeat.  Our panel will share some best practices – and most likely some war stories – of how to improve communication and effectiveness when your development team is dispersed throughout several countries.



Biographies:

Joe Cleaver is the Platform Business Evangelist for Microsoft's Developer Experience group, focusing on Windows 8, Windows Phone, Apps for Office and Azure for top tier Commercial customers and partners. Prior to joining Microsoft, Joe spent 10 years working in Financial Services, where he managed strategic projects using a combination of offshore, near shore and onshore teams. He also co-founded iTEAMS, a global testing service that utilized onshore and offshore teams to provide independent testing and expertise to key customers around the world.

If Joe appears a bit sleepy today, it's because he has six kids and hasn't slept since 2001.


Andrew Parlock is the Senior Market Manager for Commercial Cyber with Battelle Memorial’s Global Security Business, currently focused on the threats to the Global Financial Markets. He received his Bachelors of Science in Aerospace Engineering from West Virginia University and MBA from Michigan State University. Prior to joining Battelle, he spent 6 years with Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman working in National Security (no he wasn’t a spy). He has more than 20 years’ experience in International Business Development and Consulting, having had the opportunity to travel and execute business throughout the US, Europe and Australia.
 
When not working on his 143 year old home in Baltimore, MD, he focuses on his current mid-life crisis, triathlons.


Mike Sadowski has been involved in developing web-based business applications, using a mix of onshore and offshore teams for most of his career. Previously he was the CIO at Odyssey Logistics & Technology, a venture-backed logistics company, where he led a 70-person IT team engaged in proprietary applications development, IT infrastructure management, and support. Prior to this, Mike was VP of Product Management at RELY Software, a logistics software vendor, and a Principal at PRTM Management Consultants (acquired by PwC), where he consulted to technology-based companies such as IBM, 3Com and Seagate. Mike has a BASc in Electrical Engineering from the University of Toronto, a Master of Engineering in Operations Research from Cornell University, and an MBA from Cornell.


Gordon Adelsberg (Moderator) started his career doing biochemical research and product development in the food industry, then spent several years developing and testing data mining software (Now they call it “big data.”) at SAS Institute in Cary, North Carolina. He then completed an MBA at Penn State and began a decade long career in business management consulting. He recently stepped away from consulting to become CEO of Communication for Geeks®.

Agile Resiliency

IT and Software Engineering are embracing Agile methods to benefit from incremental and iterative delivery. Nonetheless, many technology-dependent clients, including large corporations and government, are anything but Agile.

These clients say they want to "be Agile," but their business practices (for requirements, procurement, project management, and systems engineering) are still operating using waterfall methodology. It is not a conflict that will be easily resolved, but there is opportunity to take control of the debate.

An approach to capitalizing on this opportunity is "Agile Resiliency." It is about strengthening and reinforcing Agile values, methods, and techniques to scale and thrive in this conflicted environment by judiciously integrating Agile with the architectural strengths of the Capability Maturity Model Integration (CMMI).  CMMI is a proven, widely adopted framework used to deploy a continuous improvement infrastructure. While the CMMI has been successfully deployed in support of more "traditional" development projects, its strengths can be leveraged to strengthen Agile methods as well. Why not embrace both?

Biography:

Jeff Dalton is a certified SCAMPI Lead Appraiser, Scrum Master, CMMI Instructor, and Scrum product owner.  He is President of Broadsword, an author, and consultant with over twenty-five years of technology and software process improvement experience. Jeff is the author of the popular blog “Ask the CMMI Appraiser” where he answers questions on topics related to agile methods, CMMI, and SCAMPI.  He is co-author of the SEI Publication “CMMI or Agile: why not embrace both?!” and is the creator of “AgileCMMI,” an iterative and incremental approach to process improvement based on the CMMI.  His software engineering and process improvement career spans over two decades with companies including Electronic Data Systems, Ernst & Young, Intellicorp, and eLoyalty.

Jeff lives in Michigan with his family, is an instrument-rated pilot and experimental airplane builder, and is active on several corporate and non-profit boards.
